1969 A Spanish enclave disappears

27. Ifni (EA9) Ifni (better is Sidi Ifni) is a city in the Southwest of Marocco and lies on the Atlantci Ocean. The town counts about 20.000 inhabitants. In 1476 Spanish troops occupied an area in the region of nowaday Ifni, and called the area Santa Cruz de al Mar Pequeña. The area stayed in Spanish hand until it was recaptured by the rulers of the Saadi dynasty. After the war between Span and Marocco, in 1860 Marocca agreed in the treaty of Tétouan.that Sidi Ifni and the territoruim of Ifni was spanish property. During the period after the treaty, called the Scramble for Africa, Spain conquered also in 1884 the area of todays Western Sahara. This area was called Spanish Sahara but also Rio de Oro and Saguia el-Hamra. Marocco on its turn entered the area in 1957 but left the capitol of Sidi Ifni in Spanish hands. Because of pressure from Marocco Spain renounced Sidi Ifni in 1969.
