20. Molucca & Celebes Islands (PK6) The Molucca Islands or better Maluku is a group of islands in the east of the Indonesian archipel, and are situated (clockwise) between celebes, the Phillipines, New Guinea, Australia and Timor. Maluku belongs political to Indonesia and geographical to Wallacea and Melanesia. Depending on the borderline you take, Maluku belongs to Asia or Australia. The original Malukoes are Melanisians. After Worldwar Two the Dutch wanted to restore the area as before the occupation of Japan. The result was a war between the army of Soekarno and the Dutch, supported by the special army corps of Maluku. The Netherlands wanted to create a federal Indonesia with a kind of independency for Maluku. However they got no support from other countries, especialla not from the United States. Therefore the Malukoes decleared Maluku independent as “Republik Maluku Selatan”(RMS) on April 24, 1950. This led to a dangerous situation for the Moluku military in the Dutch army (KNIL) on Java. As temporary solution the Dutch government decided to repatriate the 4000 Moluku soldiers and their families to the Netherlands. Those Families would brought back to Moluku when the sitioation would be cleared. However the Dutch governement never kept this promise. Sulawesi or Celebes is one of the bigger islands of Indonesia. On the list of biggest islands of the world it has number eleven, four time bigger than the Netkerlands. In 1946 the island became part of East-Indonesia (Negara Indonesia Timur). In 1950 this part went also to Indonesia.
