18. Sumatra (PK4) Sumatra does range fifth on the list of biggest islands of the world. Its surface is almost 500.000 km² and belongs to Indonesia. In the North of the island you can find Malaya. In the South-East lies , separated by the Street of Sunda, the island of Java. In the east of Sumatra you can find Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. The west of Sumatra Is the Indian Ocean. In 1883 a Dutch survey group, led by Aeiko Zijker got permission from the sultan of Langkat to searh for oil. This was the start of the Royal Dutch company to Exploitation of Petro. This conmapny is now known as Shell. The Dutch got more and more influence in the area in the 19th en 20th century, which led to the Dutch Colony of Nederlands Indië. This influence had negative feelings of the local upper classs. Local Rulers lost power and landdowners lost their properties which led to the Java-war (1825-1830) The govenment of the Netherlands resulted into better life conditions in the colony. This led also to more independency feelings by the locals. After Worldwar Two the Indonesians called themselves independent on August 17, 1945. Result was the independency war which did take many lives among the Dutch as well among the local people. Moluccas as wel as Chinese, wo supported the Netherlands becamse also victim of violance. The Dutch recognisedthe Independency of Indonesia on December 27, 1949. From this date, many Dutch and Moluccans flew to the Netherlands. After WW-II, Sumatra became part of Indonesia, but the nationalists of Atjeh did not recogniose the souverainity of Jakart.a This resulted in a guirilla war when in 1953 president Soekarno decleared Atjeh and North Sumatra to be one Sumatra. This war ended in 1959 after Sumatra got a special status.
