53. German Democratic Republic (Y2) The German Democratic Republic (in German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR), also called East-Germany was a communistic country in Wstern Europe. The DDR was part of the Sovjet Union occupied area of the defeated Germany. Officially the DDR existed from October 7, 1949 until October 3, 1990, the day of reunion of Germany. The different states of the German Democratic Republic, abolished in 1952, got restored In 1958 the German Democratic Republic accessed the Warshaw Pact after the other German country, the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD), accessed NATO. Other points of history were building the Berlin Wall in 1961, the rapprochement of BRD and DDR in the Seventies, member of the United nations in 1973, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the reunion of Germany in 1990. Until 1970, diplomacy with the DDR was difficult, bacause the BRD would break any diplomacy with countries which accepte the DDR as an independent country. The new “Ostpolitik” of Willy Brant in the Seventies changed the politic color, and the BRD got diplomatic relations with the DDR and Poland. In 1988 inhabitants of the DDR prtested against the regime of the DDR and in the Autumn 1989 they broke down the Berlin Wall (November 9 and 10, 1989) On October 3, 1990, eleven months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East and West Germany glued together as the Federal Republic of Germany.
