52. Peoples Republic of Yemen (VS9A) The Democratic People’s Republic Yemen, called often South-Yemen was between 1967 1990 a country in the Southern part of the Yemen of today. In 1832, the British East-Indian-Company conquered the harbor town of Aden, to use this city as a warehouse of coal, needed for ships traveling to Britis-India. After the conquer, Aden became part of British-India. This changed in 1937 when Aden, and the surrounde area became a British colony. The back country of South Yemen was a protectorare of the Britis, formed in 1886. This area was controlled by local Arab monarchs but with influence of the British. The economical place however was the Colony of Aden. In 1963 the colony and the Western part of the protectorate formed the South Arab Federation. The eastern part of the protectorate (Hadramaut) refused to join this federation. Two national groups; the Front of Liberation of Occupied South0Yemen (FLOSY) and the National Liberation Front (NLF) started a war against the British management. Wenn Egypt closed the Suez-Canal in 1967, the British pulled back from the region. The result was the independence of South Yemen on November 30, 1967. South Yemen got a new name, People’s Republic of Yemen managed by the NLF. In June, 1969 the Marxistic wing of the NLF took over the mangement and chenged the name of the country in Yemen Democratic Republic on December 1, 1970. All political groups were merged into the Yemen Socialist Party, resulting in a one- party state. Relationship with North Yemen went smoothly in the first years, but hostalities kept away. North and South Yemen promised in 1972 to become one country, this happened much later in 1990.
