08. Italian Somaliland (I5) Italian-Somalilandwas an Italian colony, which existed from the end of the 19th century until 1960. Durich Worldwar Two the colony was occupied by troops of the Britisch Empire. The colony is situated in the Somalia of today. The northern part declared themself independent under the name Pointland. History Italië slaagde erin in de periode 1880–1890 In the period of 1880- 1890 Italy could occupy some parts of Somalia. They signed border treaties with Great Brittain on March 28 and April 15, 1891. The treaty promised that the Italians would not cross the Jubba river and not to enter the are area of the Nile. In the years following 1891 the Italians consolidated their strenght in the area and asked their people to settle down in Somalia. After the Second Italia-Abessinian War in 1936 the Italians conquerred Ethiopia. Italian-Somaliland became part of Italia East-Africa, togehter with Italia-Ethiopia. In 1941 the British Empire occupied Italian-East Africa. During the Second Warld War the Italians fought aside the Germans. It was easy for the British soldiers to take cantrol over the German and Italian colonies, such as Libia and Italian- East Africa in East Africa. The Brittish soldiers occupied the area until November 1949. Italy then became governemnt of the area, which was now called Somalia, a new trust area of the United Nations. Somalia became independent on July 1, 1960, and imidiately joined British-Somaliland, which became indepentent on June 26, 1960. Togehter British Somaliland and Somalia became the country of Somalia. French Somaliland was a French colony until 1977. In that year French Somaliland became independent as the new country of Djibouti.
