02. French Indochina (FI8) The Union of Indochina, also called French-Indochina, was formed on cctober17, 1887. This Union was formed from the French colonies of Tonkin, Annam, Cochin-China and Cambodja. In 1893 they added Laos and in 1898 the consession of Kouang-Tchéou-Wan to this Union. After World War Two, the Union felt apart but until their independency, they were stil connected to France. In 1954, after the French-Indochina War, the French left the Colonies, and the government was handed to the governments of North Vietman ans South Vietman. Also the kingdom of Cambodia and the kingdom of Laos became independent. Kouang-Tchéou-Wan was in 1946 tgiven back to China. From November,1887 until March, 1945 the Union was controlled by governors. After WW-II High Commisioners controlled the Union. The territory of Guangzhouwan, (don’t this mixed up with Guangzhou (Canton)) official Territoire de Kouang- Tchéou-Wan, was a region on the coastline of Zhanjiang in China and was ‘rented’ to France and controlled by French Indochina. Capitol of this are was Fort-Bayard, now called Zhanjiang. French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in February,1943. After Japan surrended, Guangzhouwan became in 1945 again part of Chibna. The former French Indochina (FI8) is now diveded into the following countries: • Vietmam (3W) (Cochinchina, Annam en Tonkin) • Cambodja (XU) (Cambodia) • Laos (XW) (Laos) • China (B) (Kouang-Tchéou-Wan)
