The Hunt for VK9NS. On December 17, 1989 I was lucky to work Mats, SM7PKK as 3D2XR from Rotuma Island. Rotuma was added to the DXCC- list in 1988. At that time, I was a little pistol, using CW with simple antennas and just 100 Watt. A few days later I heard Jim Smith VK9NS, in CW of course. During the 27 years of my hamradio time, I was never in QSO with a station from Norfolk Island. The Entity was stil on my MOST WANTED COUNTRIES list. I did not start calling him because Jim himself was calling Mats, 3D2XR. In the QSO with Mats Jim asked him to make some QSY. Another DXpedition was going on and the pile up of 3D2XR covered the transmit frequency of that other DX staion. It was 3Y5X, from Bouvet Island. Of course Mats went QSY and VK9NS disappeared also. After this Oceania QSO it took 4 days to make the first CW QSO with 3Y5X, Bouvet on December 29, 1989. Of course also a new one for me. Today I would call it an ATNO, an All Time New One. But I could not put VK9NS, Norfolk Island in my logbook. Every time I heard Jim on the band I was not the only one calling him. In a very short time the pile up became allways big. Then after some 15 minutes Jim went QRT or QSY to SSB. Saturday, September 11, 1993. A nice quiet sunny day. From 8:00to 8:30 Utc I listened on different HF bands, looking for a station on Wake Island. Without any result. So I went to the garden helping my XYL with some heavy jobs. At 9:45 I needed someting left in the shack and put the tranceiver on, hearing the end of a QSO. The sound of the signal told me it was a DX station. Was it the Wake station? One minute later I was susre, it was Jim, VK9NS. After some unanswered calls in the pile up I decided to go up with my TX for some 500 Hz. And Yesss, it was enough to get an answer from Jim. PA0ABM 599 BK. My answer was short, PA0ABM TU JIM, 599 TU ..!! I wrote relaxed, with a big smile on my face the QSL card for Norfolk Island, listening to to VK9NS and the pileup. . Ten minutes later the band was quit again, VK9NS was gone again. The QSL card was sent direct to the malbox on Norfolk Island and three weeks later I found the QSLcard of VK9NS in my mailbox. One less to make my Honor Roll CW. In the years after it turned out to be not the only QSO with VK9NS. On the Internet I found som old activities of Jim VK9NS and his wife VK9NL Kirstii.
